"You can beeeee who you want to be!" Come on, moms you know you want to belt out the rest of this Disney Jr. song! "Be a pirate crew or royalty!" Umm, wait. Do I want to encourage my children to be thieves? Because, basically that's what pirates are, right?
Think about it, the types of pirates that come to mind are:
We don't think of the more true to life unsavory pirates like this guy:
And it's highly unlikely that they'll become royalty given A) They weren't born into a royal family that we know of (still holding out hope that we'll hit the ancestral jackpot someday) and B)We live in Midwestern USA, nowhere near a future royal son or daughter in law.
I have the privilege and honor of being a mommy to an all boy Boy and a sometimes girly, sometimes tomboy Girl. So when baby Girl has tv time and Disney Jr songs come on, we laugh and sing together. Most of the time I have forgotten them in a few days, but ths summer the Pirates and Princess theme song has gotten stuck in my head more than once. So, now that I really think about the lyrics I understand the idea is for kids to dream and pretend. But in my head I think, 'you can be who you want to be, with exception.'
